What you need: Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster

I don't mean to make small talk, but can we talk about the Sydney weather?! Oh my giddy aunt. The past few days weeks have been ridiculously inconsistent… (Isn't it supposed to be Spring?) Enter Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster (I prefer "liquid gold"), an amazing product that will provide "constant hydration" even against unpredictable elements. And lord knows, we have those! Slap it straight on the skin when you need a hydration-hit, or add it to your moisturiser to crank the hydration factor up to 11! And if you're flying anywhere, You. Need. It. And PS Anyone who's ever used anything Dermalogica, knows it's THE BOMB!

"Buttermilk": You need this typeface in your life!

One of the first posts I ever did on this blog was Cool website: Dailydropcap.com, extolling the virtues of a NYC-based graphic designer for whom there are no words - Jessica Hische. So it gives me great pleasure to announce that you can now buy some of Jessica’s incredible fonts, such as my fave, Buttermilk directly from her (amazing - go see!) store. Do it. Your computer-y hard drive will thank you for it. Truly.

The "Frequently Asked Questions" page of Jessica's online store unearths some interesting insights into the creation of "Buttermilk":

Q: Buttermilk is your first commercial font - how long was it in development before you released it? A: It was in development on and off for about 2 or 3 months.

Q: Which letters proved the most difficult to create. A: The creation of the letters wasn’t nearly as hard as doing the kerning and making ligatures and figuring out how to idiot-proof it. If I had to name a character that was hard to make it would probably be the uppercase J (which I still think is just ok, but I hate J’s) and the %, which for some reason was giving me grief.

Q: What were you inspired by when creating Buttermilk? A: I drew a few words for a logo we were working on at Louise Fili Ltd. and the logo ended up being killed. I really loved the letters I drew (which I think were originally a bit inspired by bodoni poster italic) so I decided to draw a full alphabet anyway. Making it into a font was more of an excercise for me to learn how to use fontlab (which I still feel like i have very rudimentary knowledge in).

Q: What’s the meaning behind the name “Buttermilk”? A: I think when you name a font, you want to pick something that feels in character with the font and also looks beautiful when set in the font. I originally wanted to name the font “Yours Truly” but there were already three or four bad fonts named that. Buttermilk popped in my head one afternoon and it felt right. It’s a very thick, round word that feels feminine but not too feminine which I think matched the font perfectly. It also utilizes some of my favorite characters of the font, the uppercase B the tt ligature and the lowercase k.

Q: What words would you use to describe the “character” of Buttermilk? A: A bold script that is fun but still sophisticated and is feminine but not “girly”.

Q: Do you plan on making more fonts in the future? A: Absolutely. It’s a pretty time consuming process though and I am only one woman so it is slow-going. I have too many projects I want to do right now!

Johnny Weir for Bluefly: "It's art".

How can you not love (American figure skater) Johnny Weir?

A big thank you to Katie, author of my new favourite blog The Social Secretary, for the heads up!

Zealandia: "A classic 50's beach house"

The words "fifties" and "beach house" are whirling around my mental inspiration board with the fury of a tornado (I think you know why), so imagine my delight when I found Zealandia! Fully restored and boasting modern finishes with a classic edge, Zealandia sits in the heart of Portsea, on Australia's Victorian coast, and can accommodate up to 6 people looking for a unique, relaxing getaway. Tranquil gardens, a 50's style, duck-egg blue, heated in-ground pool, generous entertaining decks? Tick. Tick. Tick. Zealandia was featured in the February/March 2007 issue of Belle magazine - Check. It. Out.

Room of the week: Greenwich Village Orange crush

"Hair guru John Barrett, who has styled the tresses of Catherine Zeta-Jones, Courtney Cox Arquette, and the late Princess Diana, believes that furnishings, like hairstyles, should be beautiful yet practical. His Greenwich Village living room, which opens onto a sizeable terrace, is made for entertaining, with plush seating and plenty of places to set down a drink, such as the vintage cocktail table from the Pace Collection. The painting is by James Nares and the cowhide rug is by the Rug Company." - Elle Decor

Table Tonic Muse: Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola was recently photographed by the great Peter Lindbergh for the September 2010 issue of L’Uomo Vogue magazine. Sofia is currently promoting her latest film, "Somewhere". Love this shot. Such swoony hair...

On my bookshelf: "Cook Like an Italian" by Tobie Puttock

Remember Jamie Oliver's Aussie "mate" who would make the odd appearance on his cooking show? Well, that was Tobie Puttock, and his third book, "Cook Like an Italian" is just out and it's an absolute cracker. Tobes decided to take some time out for snowboarding (and culture immersion) in Italy, and this is the result - a beautiful, scrapbook-style cookbook, documenting his culinary journey through all the great cities of Italy, as well as the lesser known ones, "Ascoli Piceno" for example! And PS the photography is by Sharyn Cairns, whose praises I was singing only the other week...

Our new 1950's (beach) house floorplan

I'm not sure how proficient you all are in "floorplan reading" (hot tip: marry an architect!), but here's another peek at our new place (it's got a "patio"!). The bottom of the image is due North and also the front yard, while the top of the image is where the back yard is. We love, love, love her and yes, I can't wait to fill you all in on her (gradual) makeover. We'll move in just before Christmas (yeah, that should be interesting!), and the Mini Tonics are as good as booked into schools/daycare already for 2011! And PS When I win Lotto? I'm totally buying her a Togo.

Above, the beautiful backyard (those trees!), complete with two separate log cabins (hello office!) and below, the front yard. Yes, that's Mini Tonic #1 testing out the turf...

PPS Thank you all SO much for the kind words and congratulatory comments, tweets and emails. Wow. You gave me "a heart-attack of happy", as Gala would say...

Julia Roberts does Swedish Elle magazine

I'm rather enjoying this healthy dose of Julia we seem to be getting, now that Eat Pray Love is doing the rounds. Isn't this just the definition of pretty? PS If you're in Sydney, come along to this charity screening of EPL on Thursday 7th October!

Room of the week: Hip in the kitch!

Table Tonic reader photo: 2 Suzanis and a Juju Hat

I just had to share these beautiful pictures, sent to me by a customer who recently bought 2 Vintage Suzanis and a Juju hat from the Table Tonic online store (remember this post?). The Juju now lives in the main bedroom (isn't it perfect?), adorning a freshly painted black wall.

PS You can never go wrong with plain, crisp white bedlinen - Modern and fresh, but so versatile (and easy to instantly "update" with a blanket/bedspread).

PS When someone's home looks as blisteringly beautiful  as this, you know their blog is going to be worth checking out, right? Right. So, go say hi to Raylynn over at My World. The girl sweats style.

Sneak peak: Our new 1950's (beach) house!!

So. We now have an "old house" (past), a "new old house" (present) and "a new new house" (future) - having trouble keeping up? I don't blame you! Anyway, I couldn't resist - here's another image of our new home-to-be, one of many images from the extensive photographic portfolio generated by Mr Tonic at open for inspection number 1, taken halfway (I'm not even joking) up the backyard:

(above) That's the main living area on the left...

most beautiful beaches, only metres away!

Bohemian accessories coming soon to tabletonic.com.au!

Oh my giddy aunt, what a week! Sunday, as you now know, was my 36th birthday (thank you guys so much for all the amazing birthday wishes!). I had a hectic (hello children!), but beautiful day, which started off with a totally unexpected Apple MacBook Pro Laptop (I KNOW!!!!) from Mr Tonic and the Mini Tonics, followed by a crisp glass of Rose and lunch at The Boathouse in Palm Beach with my Mum & Dad, and finished with me buying the Sunday papers (which is rare) on the way home - which I have yet to read. Then yesterday, we go and buy our dream-house-to-be and today, these arrive for my online store - the most incredible vintage Indian messenger bags. They're enormous, and all heavily encrusted with mirrors, tassels, silver, pompoms, shells, embroidery, chains, the works! The "backs" of them are just as amazing as the front, and no two are the same!

(below) As well as the bags, I've got more
(which I'm wearing about 7 of here!).

And yes, they'll all be up on the

The bags remind me a lot of some of the ones seen on
as well as the beautiful Simone Camille ones
(but, phwoaar, the price!).

Gimme! of the day: Togo-a-go-go

Stop it with the metallic silver Togo! Very rock n' Roll...

On a personal note: We bought a house today!

A few months ago, a fantastic 1950's beach house came on the market on Sydney's Northern beaches, right where we were looking & "400 metres from the surf". Mr Tonic went for a look with Mini Tonic #1. I must have been washing my hair that day, because I didn't go. But Mr Tonic took lots of photos with his iPhone (a hot tip if you're house-hunting - So often we look at potential apartments/houses for 15 minutes then chuck our life savings at them!). But anyway. A week later I did go to the open house, and subsequently gave it the thumbs down. Having just come off the back of a major renovation, I wasn't ready to lose Mr Tonic for another month year of Sundays just yet. The weeks passed. The property went to auction and got passed in. The weeks passed. Mr Tonic and I sold our beautiful house, with the aim of moving up to the beautiful Northern Beaches, 45 minutes by car from where we lived. We made an offer on the new house. We made another offer on the new house. The weeks passed, and we started to talk ourselves out of it. Then today, Mr Tonic calls me. "I may have another birthday present for you, but I'm not sure how you're going to feel about it... They've accepted our offer..." YIPEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We bought a house! We bought a house! We bought a house! She's beautiful, but she's old, and we plan on restoring the shizz out of her (in between dips at the beach!). So you know I had to share her with you, right?

(above) That's her! An image from the August 1958 issue of Australian House and Garden magazine(!!). She was designed by an Architect in 1956 as his family home and featured in H&G a couple of years later. She has 4 bedrooms, oodles of glass (gorgeous 50's details a-plenty), trees everywhere, a sprawling backyard... I think we could just be a match made in heaven. Happy days! PS How will I sleep tonight?!

19 September 2010

Happy Birthday to meee!

Today is my 36th birthday! Although, I'm pleased to announce that I neither feel nor act a day over 26... PS Just quietly, I'm hoping someone might surprise me with one of these:

11 blogs I (only) discovered this week

Spring has sprung Down Under (although the weather clearly hasn't got the memo yet), which means I'm going to need an entire new wardrobe. Well, a couple more Lee Mathews dresses and a new K Jacques sandal may have to suffice. For this reason alone, my new blog discoveries this week are somewhat heavy on fashion. Enjoy!
